The toughest week of 2008 was bestowed upon me last week. Most certainly every one of my emotions came into play and my strength, most certainly put to the test.
Helping with the arrangements for my grandfathers funeral, visiting him in the Chapel of Rest on my birthday to say my goodbyes and pay my final respects. The funeral was held on Friday 7th November 2008. The service was beautiful. His favourite Matt Monro track played us in. Upon hearing his 'life story', it was a time for reflection as we listened to Andrea Boccelli sing 'Time to Say Goodbye'. Ella Fitzgerald singing 'Mack the Knife' played us out.
Back at the wake, my grandfathers two favourite snacks being offered as a table centre piece - Pork Pies and Walnut Whips. There were plenty of tears, but some smiles too.
We'll miss him dearly.
Saturday, a subdued day until.....
Every parents nightmare, a bang at the door and a little voice shouting 'Abbie has been hurt badly, come quick!'
Its here the brain switches off and goes into auto pilot. I grabbed my boots and keys and ran.
I cant begin to explain what was going through my mind whilst running to the aid of my 11 year old daughter.
To cut a long story short, she is a very lucky little girl!
She'd been playing with friends, climbed a spiked metal railing, slipped and impailed her chest. Thankfully no major organs were punctured and after several hours at the hospital, a tetanus injection, some morphine and a few dozen stitches, she was allowed home to recover.
I'm currently enjoying being 'nurse alpha', and Abbie..... well, shes milking it!
I'm keeping her spirits up, although currently, making her laugh too much is painful for her.
She's making a good recovery! She's going to be OK!
Thank you to those that offered support and kind words!
